 The End is Near

I don't need the calendar to tell me that the school year is almost over. I merely look to the slow deterioration of my children, home and what little is left of my mind to know the end is near.

The kids are down to one frayed strap and a piece of dental floss precariously holding their backpacks together. Since I refuse to buy any new pants until the day before the first day of school next year, the boys are getting sunburns on their calves at recess. We've got one sock left between us, and they are alternating days wearing it based on bunion flare-ups from their too-small shoes.

And we're tired of homework. Specifically, the never-ending projects which somehow require me carrying the bulk of the workload. I've used so much glue this past semester that all of my fingerprints have been cast in Elmer's skeletons 10 times over. Our kitchen table looks like we've been playing the home version of C.S.I. or we're experimenting with different identities to enter the Witness Protection Program. I truly hope I've made my last late-night trip to Wal-Mart for supplies to recreate the Eiffel Tower in Popsicle sticks. (I'm having a heck of time working off that extra five pounds and getting that horrible grape stain off my tongue.)

We could use a little break from the book reports as well. While I certainly appreciate a healthy appetite for books, I could do without another story about childhood angst written with a plethora of italics and exclamation points! The only things I want my 12 year old reading this summer are Interstate signs and my lips when I whisper to him to fetch me another lemonade because the baby has just fallen asleep after an afternoon playing on the beach.

But it's the waking up early that's killing me. I've noticed that we've gradually pushed our wake-up time later and later each week with the snooze button forsaking some new element in our morning routine for a few extra minutes of blessed sleep. First we gave up making beds and then reading the paper. This week we're lucky if we leave the house without shampoo still in our hair and breakfast of Tic Tacs and Chapstick.

So if you think that I am dreading the end of the school year--that somehow my workload will increase with all four children at home 24/7 as opposed to 18/5 when I have only two at home--you would be wrong in that assumption.

I look at summer as my 2 1/2 months to undo all of the good habits their teachers have instilled the rest of the year. We need some mornings to sleep through the alarm. We need mid-week sleepovers. We need lunches on plates, not scrunched up in brown paper bags. I need to smell sun block and chlorine not industrial janitorial cleaner and sweaty gym socks.

Feel free to remind me of this nostalgia in August when I'm complaining of walking into the grocery store for yet another package of hot dogs in unmatched flip flops and a sheen of bug spray.

But until then, the only number 2 pencils we'll be using will be on the miniature golf course.

This was funny - we are out of socks too.

I just got burnt out this past Tuesday. The kids in school (my work), you can tell are even tired of one another. Everyone is bickering about nonsense. At home I am tired of packing four lunches and hearing moans of borrowed clothes without permission from the "real" owner. Then...then I remember the evil of living in the Midwest is having to make up snowdays. Uhg. Someone at our house is in school till June 2. So if I sound envious well, I think I am.

We are in until May 29 officially, but I think today was it for most of our school. And parents.

We'll have to limp through the next two weeks together. Sockless.

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complex and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

I do accept as true with all the concepts you have introduced in your post. They're really convincing and can certainly work. Still, the posts are very short for starters. May you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

According to Reuters, a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2011 found that "The more aggressively a bank lobbied before the financial crisis, the worse its loans performed during the economic downturn -- and the more bailout dollars it received". Now, despite its former status as the basket case of Wall Street, Citigroup and its hired guns are welcome on Capitol Hill, weighing in on and even drafting bills -- like one the House committee signed off on earlier this month, exempting several classes of derivatives from a rule intended to prevent government insurance from backstopping risky trades.I won't dispute for one second the problems of a system that demands immense amount of fund-raisers by its legislators," said Representative Jim Himes, a third-term Democrat of Connecticut, who supported the recent industry-backed bills and leads the party's fund-raising efforts in the House. A member of the Financial Services Committee and a former banker at Goldman Sachs, he is one of the top recipients of Wall Street donations. While visiting family and friends in Amman, Jordan last week after being away for over two years, I was constantly being asked about my observations on Amman, and whether it had changed since I was last there in October 2010.During the first couple of days, I would usually respond saying I noticed more traffic, and new construction here and there. A few days into my visit, things got clearer (I'm blaming the jetlag for my delayed observation). I noticed a change, a big one. Somehow, politically-divided Ammanites were united on one issue: Syrians.Last time I visited Jordan, the annoying term the "Arab Spring" was not even coined. So, fast forward two years, I would have expected to see change along these lines, but what I saw instead was not youth marching in the streets asking for reform (to the dismay of many D.C. think tanks), but rather Jordanian citizens who are increasingly becoming concerned about the influx of refugees from their war-ravaged next door neighbor.Citigroup was the megabank that received the most taxpayer assistance during the financial crisis, a fact perhaps related to the very same lobbying practices now being used to rein in regulation christian louboutin daffodile
